Recruitment from Direct Application

A similar situation exists when an individual who is seeking employment makes a direct approach to the company entirely on his own initiative and not in response to any advertisement. Here again, if he is of a calibre suitable to sell the company's products, it can be a wise move to engage him against the day when one finds it necessary to divide a territory which has become too much for the existing salesman to continue to cover in its entirety.

The initiative which prompts a man to make a direct approach to a firm which is not currently seeking staff has its own virtue. Frequently, when salesmen change their jobs, they move into companies and, indeed, into trades or industries, not from choice but from necessity. This is brought about by the limited selection of vacant jobs in any particular sphere which are likely to be advertised at any one time. When a man writes to you, 'out of the blue', and says he wants to join your organization, he has made a specific choice. What he knows of your company, its products and the market in which it operates, obviously appeals to him. If you take him on it is likely that he will find his work satisfying. He will, therefore, be a better worker and will be likely to settle down and stay with the company.
