Just starting out? We can help.

Starting a new business venture?  When we started Ubisan back in 2006 we remember it being quite a daunting experience.

Aside from all the company formation stuff, bank account setups and the all important stationary purchases, it’s easy to get carried away with what’s actually required for your initial foray onto the web.

Sure…you definitely need a web presence but we firmly believe that in the early stages of a company formation a “less is more” philosophy is definitely the way to go.

In the early days of starting a business, your time can be just as valuable a resource as your capital.  Recognising this, it’s for this reason that we often talk clients out of diving headfirst into the deep and murky pool of social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc).

We prefer to listen to what you have to say and take a good look at your business, then apply the knowledge we have gained from working with nearly 100 other businesses across a wide spectrum of industries and  come up with a plan that will be the most effective use of your time and money.

The DO’s.

The list is by no means exhaustive and not everything may apply but with years of experience of working with startups, we believe these are good pointers:

  • Sign up for a Google account.
  • Acquire a decent domain name with a .com or .co.uk extension
  • Setup a simple holding page with at the least, basic contact details.
  • Get Google Analytics installed on your website to allow you to track visitors.  ( http://www.google.co.uk/analytics
  • Add your business to Google Places.  http://www.google.co.uk/places
  • Register accounts with Twitter, Facebook and Youtube.
  • Start writing content for your website (just use Word, Notepad or whatever).
  • Make sure you include your web and email address on your business cards.
  • Ignore any emails or cold calls you may get from companies offering to promote your company or your website.

The DON’TS

There are are a fair number of pitfalls that can be easily avoided when you are starting out.  Remember…YOUR TIME is your most valuable resource so use it wisely…

  • Don’t rush into broadcasting to services like Twitter and Facebook before you’ve actually really got something to say.
  • Don’t use a Hotmail, Yahoo, etc email address on your business literature.
  • Avoid purchasing lots of versions of the same domain name ( .net, .tv, .com, .org, .name etc)
  • Make sure your webhost has servers located within the UK.
  • Don’t pay money to any company that guarantees you search engine optimisation success.
  • Don’t pay any of the established directories (Yell.com, Thomsonlocal, etc) any money.
